It is with sadness that Chesterfield Folk Club announces its closure and that its remaining planned concerts are cancelled. As chair of the committee, I would like to take this opportunity to comment.
Thank you for making this club one of the finest in the country. We have had the pleasure of staging some of the best performers in the land since we took over running the club in January 2010. We have staged 121 concerts, the last 56 of which have been at the superb venue of the Chesterfield Library Theatre. We are grateful for the Library’s support in reserving the nights we booked and for the premises officer’s enthusiastic help without which we could not have managed the evenings.
As an audience, you have been second to none. Your friendly and appreciative support and turning out in significant numbers gave us the confidence and ability to book the best acts. They, in turn, were keen to play at the theatre and were effusive in their praise of the reception you gave them and of the venue itself.
I am sure that, as an audience, you would wish to thank the committee who gave freely of their time to organize these not-for-profit concerts. Each event took approximately 100 hours of work, the reward for which was the exceptional nights of entertainment. Although none of the committee would ever seek the limelight, I would like to thank Geoff and Kath Deighton, Steve and Julie Swallow, Kam and (the late) Paul Britland, Dave Banks and Pauline Bateson. Without them we would have had no artists, no tickets, no advertising, no brilliant sound, no bar, no meet-and-greet and, in the best tradition of folk clubs, no raffle!
We had decided some time ago that we would finish running the club this December and had hoped that other younger people might have stepped forward to take it over or start to run their own. As it happens, in common with much of the world in 2020, the pandemic has altered our plans to finish with a string of sell-out concerts culminating in our most booked and revered artist, Jez Lowe with his band the Bad Pennies.
It remains for me only to say thank you again and only wish I could have said it in person in my role as MC.
Very best wishes form all at Chesterfield Folk Club
David Bateson OBE, Chair
